Abstract
The apparel industry in Lesotho has been a major source of employment, yet working conditions
of employees have long been a concern. This research aimed to investigate the impact of
international and local value chain challenges on the working conditions of employees in apparel
factories in Maputsoe, Lesotho. The research questions focusing on the effects of cost containment
measures, quality control standards, high labour reserve, labour laws and policies on the working
conditions of employees. This study employed a qualitative approach to gather primary data. The
primary data was analysed using thematic analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of
the findings. The findings revealed that the apparel industry in Maputsoe, Lesotho, faces value
chain challenges that influence employees working conditions, including exposure to exploitative
practices and low wages among others. Finally, the study concluded that challenges within the
apparel value chain have a significant impact on the working conditions of employees. The
recommendations suggested that the management of firms, labour unions and policy makers
should collaborate to improve working conditions of employees such as increased wages.
